The principles that allow aircraft to fly are also applicable in car racing. The only difference being the wing or airfoil shape is mounted upside down producing downforce instead of lift. Airfoils or wings are also used in the front and rear of the car in effort to generate more downforce. Downforce is necessary in maintaining high speeds through the corners and forces the car to the track.
The total aerodynamic package of the racecar is emphasized now more than ever before. Aerodynamic improvements in wings are directed at generating downforce on the racecar with a minimum of drag. Unwanted drag that accompanies downforce will slow the car. The efficient design of a wing is based on a downforce/drag compromise.
The effect of air flowing over the car can more easily be achieved with an APR wing. Since the wings are also adjustable, the proper amount of downforce can be generated by a simple adjustment. Ideally, the amount of downforce should be enough to keep the car stable at high speed with out taking power away from the engine.
